Pope seeks religious freedom in Muslim ME

Pope Benedict made a request at a solemn mass in St Peter’s Basilica ending a two week Vatican summit of bishops from the Middle East to the leaders of Islamic countries in the Middle East on Sunday to promise liberty of worship to non-Muslims and said peace in the area was the best therapy for a worrying exodus of Christians.

Pope Benedict called on those leaders in the Middle East. He means that Human Rights should be protected by every state.
In his sermon at the gathering’s ceremonial end, the pope said independence of religion was “one of the elementary human rights that each state should always respect.”

He said that while some states in the Middle East allowed freedom of faith, “the space given to the freedom to practice religion is often quite limited.”

It was said that more than 3 million Christians live in Gulf Arab state.
